This book is about ordinary dogs – dogs of character. In particular it charts the lives of Cracker and Micky, one an Irish Wolfhound, the other a Bull Terrier.
With them as models Cecil Aldin plots a course for would-be dog owners and dog trainers. Where do you go to buy a dog? How do you set about training him or her? How do you cure bad habits? All these questions are answered.
But this book contains a great deal more. It is full of the most enchanting stories of dogs and the terrible things that happen to them. It tells of the dog that was run over but, because it was so full of the scraps stolen from the local dustbins, the car did no damage.
It tells of the dog who perfected the art of removing cakes from the cake stand. It tells of the exploits of Cracker and the Mongrel Dog Show. It is full of advice and stories told by a real lover of dogs and the advice is as true and revealing now as when the book was first published in 1927.

Cracker: a comical white bull terrier with a fetching black patch over one eye. Micky: a huge Irish wolfhound Cracker's stooge and, more importantly, his mattress. These two irresistible characters were for many years the most famous dogs in the world, for they were the favourite models of Cecil Aldin, one of the best sporting artist of his time and supreme in his portrayal of dogs. Aldin's pre-eminence in this field was recognized fully in The Times obituary of 1935, which said "... there never has been a painter of dogs to hold a candle to him". In Sleeping Partners we find Cracker and Micky at rest, adopting hilariously inventive poses in order to achieve the most satisfying state of slumber.

Synopsis

Robbie and his dog Pip are playing ball right next to that sacred and mysterious place – the Necropolis. A mighty kick from Robbie sends the ball flying over the hill and out of sight. Looking for it, the boy and Pip stumble across the entrance to a strangely painted Etruscan tomb. They go down the narrow, dark stairway and end up in a square room whose walls are covered with brightly-coloured paintings of vases, leopards and people in funny robes. Pip finds a pair of mysterious wooden pipes on the floor. Robbie plays them, bringing Vulca, a man in the wall painting, to life. Vulca admits he took Robbie's ball. In return, he gives Robbie and Pip a tour of the Etruscan tombs and introduces them to the other people in the wall painting. As a thank you, Robbie lets Vulca take the ball into the wall painting with him, to puzzle other modern visitors to the tomb.

Notes

Pip is a clearly white bull terrier and appears in almost every illustration in this picture book.

Champion is the life-story of a bull terrier who wasn't quite a bull terrier, and could never gain the right to a prefix as understood in the doggy world. His sire – alas! – was a collie, although his appearance followed that of his blue-blooded dam – a member of a family renowned for its fighting qualities. That was why 'Champion,' known in puppydom by the pedigree name of 'Fearnought', had to change it because he was by no means a champion fighter. But he was a 'champion' – in the sense known in the North – in other ways, as, for instance, when he defended the sheep against 'killers', and he was a champion friend to his owner, the ex-huntsman. This fine racy tale, illustrated with colour drawings by the author, will appeal not only to Yorkshiremen as a 'champion', but to all who have any knowledge of dog character.

How this funny little pup (afterwards the dignified and self-reliant animal that he became) was rescued by a fishing schooner three miles from shore and the effect this incident had in the lives of several people are but threads in this compelling story.
Pieface – The Sea Dog – loved his calling, and his master learned from him what he probably never would have acquired had he not received "Pieface" as his only legacy when left to face the world alone.
On land or sea, the faithful dog, whether high bred or simply mongrel, can teach lessons of faithfulness and intelligence. Here then is the eternal story of a courageous dog and his young master.

Sophie Gordon didn't let her epilepsy get in the way of her life as a teacher of deaf children. But her illness did teach her the importance of a good service dog. They're much more than pets, even more than companions, and some—a very few—seem to be able to sense when someone may be on the verge of having a seizure. Those dogs can warn the human, can be trained to fetch medications. They are as indispensable as they are rare. So, when a woman suggested that Sophie's service dog, Blanche, could be replaced when the time came, Sophie agreed to bring her dog to the Horatio Street Veterinary Practice. And now, that's why she's hired private investigator Rachel Alexander and Dash, her pit bull partner in detection: Everyone she's dealt with has disappeared and there's something they have to be told.
The mysterious woman said that Blanche would be cloned: The doctors at Side by Side were committed to making certain that people like Sophie would always have the help they needed. Unfortunately, the puppy they gave her didn't have what it takes and she wanted to let them know, not because she felt cheated, but because she didn't want anyone else to get a service dog that wasn't up to the job. Two days after meeting Rachel, Sophie was dead, apparently of a seizure, but it didn't take Dash's sensitive nose to tell that something didn't smell right and that the missing vets definitely needed further examination.

Cartoonist George Booth has spent four decades at the New Yorker constructing a universe so distinct, it would be immediately identifiable even without his signature on the bottom of the panel. In Booth's world a bare lightbulb dangles precariously . . . a frayed carpet barely covers the living room floor . . . flies buzz . . . a couple speak matter-of-factly . . . a man looks up from behind his newspaper. And somewhere, in the foreground or off to the side, a dog twitches involuntarily. In Booth's cartoons dogs act as a Greek chorus, serving as a proxy for the reader by pointing out the mundane absurdity of life that is obviously lost on their owners. This fortieth-anniversary collection highlights George Booth's best and funniest dog cartoons—with a special introduction by Bill Cosby.

When a puppy that fit into a baseball cap entered bestselling author and shepherd Marsha Boulton’s life, she had no idea he was really a rambunctious kid in a dog suit. Wally (named after the poet Wallace Stevens) became more of an experience than a dog from the moment he arrived at Lambs’ Quarters Farm. The spoiled, personality-loaded, soccer-playing pup quickly developed a penchant for high-thread-count linens, organic beef, and gourmet cooking. Life was good.
Then all hell broke loose. An intense legal battle engulfed Marsha’s partner, Stephen, and plunged the couple into a decade-long struggle. During that time, Marsha was also diagnosed with cancer. With his indomitable spirit and wild enthusiasm, Wally’s unrelenting appetite for life renewed the couple’s strength and gave them the perspective they needed to persevere. Whether playing class clown at puppy school or looking up the skirts of judges at dog shows, Wally the Wonder Dog ensured that serious laughter was a daily routine. Wally’s World is a raucous memoir, a roller-coaster ride with an irrepressible partner in paws who is impossible to forget.

This book tells the remarkable story of the animal and bird mascots of the Fighting Services and Civil Defense Forces of World War II, and of the almost unbelievable heroism which earned many animals and birds the award of the exclusive Dickin Medal—the Animals' V.C.
Several chapters are devoted to the stories of mascots who shared with our fighting men the dangers of campaigns on land and sea and in the air, and to those animals whose comradeship earned for them the love of many men and women engaged in the defensive battles of the Home Front.
Among the most dramatic chapters are those which describe the wonderful work of the rescue dogs who saved many lives after air raids, the war dogs who guarded our factories and airfields, the police horses of London, and the heroic pigeons of the National Pigeon Service.
The author, who is Organizing Secretary of the Allied Forces Mascot Club, has had access to material most of which has not hitherto been published. She has written a book—rich in humour, drama and human interest—that will fascinate and thrill every lover of animals and birds.

Tucker Crosden bred his dogs to be champions. Yet even by the frontiersman's brutal standards, the bull terrier called White Wolf was special. With teeth bared and hackles raised, White Wolf could brave any challenge the wilderness threw in his path. And Crosden had great plans for the dog until it gave in to the blood-hungry laws of nature. But Crosden never reckoned that his prize animal would run at the head of a wolf pack one day – or that a trick of fate would throw them together in a desperate battle to the death.

In "Master and Man," Bobbie is a black man who can outride, outfight, and outshoot any white man in the mountain desert. His unwavering moral code serves as a model for his often cruel and dissolute white master.
"A Lucky Dog" is a tale of the desperate flight of a jewel thief named Hagger from the man he robbed. In Colorado, facing a battle with winter cold and snow, he comes upon an isolated cabin and its sole occupant, a weakened bull terrier left there to starve to death. The man and dog come to depend on each other—to a point where Hagger would make any sacrifice and endure any hardship just to keep the dog alive.
In the title story, "Red Fire," Paul Torridon, called White Thunder by the Cheyenne Indians, and his girlfriend, Nancy Brett, are being held prisoner by the Cheyenne because they believe he can cure illness and bring rain. While Roger Lincoln, a frontiersman who has known Torridon since the early days of his feud with the Brett clan, devises a plan for their escape, Torridon's captors take every precaution they can to keep him imprisoned, even if it means killing him rather than losing him.

This is the true story of an English bull terrier who wanted to be nobody's dog … and ended up being everybody's dog. Patsy Ann arrived in 1930s Alaska with an independent streak as big as the territory. Given a good home with two loving young girls, Patsy Ann was much more interested in wandering through the hustle and bustle of this port town on the Inside Passage—a place with totem poles, smoked salmon, and people on the move. Follow this canine free spirit as she makes her way from tethered pet to official town greeter at the docks for every ship making a port of call.
Today, a bronze statue stands at the docks of Juneau commemorating everybody's dog, Patsy Ann.

Rex Milligan's writing a book about Sheldrake Grammar and it's crammed full of incident. As, for example, the time Jigger's bull terrier, Ikey, gets into class. Old Birkie's sure he can handle it, but it's more a case of Ikey taking care of him! And when the Secondary Tech. capture their flag, it's up to Milligan to retrieve it. But how can he get past the boys guarding the gate? He has a plan that depends upon split-second timing—timing that runs amok!
Even the school play gets unexpected publicity when a monkey's given a walk-on part! Milligan's description of school life is certainly colourful—the manuscript must never fall into a master's hands!

The story of three animals who, "boarded out", travelled home together two hundred and fifty miles across the wildest part of Canada: how Luath, a young golden labrador, Tao, a Siamese cat, and Bodger, an old bull terrier, set off to trek through the wilderness on their soft domestic paws.
No human being can ever say for certain how an animal thinks, but there will be very few men or women who will not know in their hearts that Bodger, Tao and Luath would have thought and acted just like this. Each animal is distinct from its fellows in the way it looks, moves, behaves – Bodger, bred to fight and endure, Tao, pampered but hard, Luath, gentle and civilised, who led his companions. All three were very much part of the author's household in Canada, and it was their remarkable behaviour and understanding of each other which inspired her to write this book. The journey on which she sent them is of course imaginary, but out of a multitude of real incidents, Sheila Burnford has created a masterpiece which demands a total suspension of disbelief.

Rage Winnoway's closest friends have always been her four dogs: Bear, Billy Thunder, Elle, and Mr. Walker. Rage's mother lies in a coma, and Rage is determined to find a way to wake her. She sets off for the hospital, and the dogs and the neighbor's goat tag along. When the devious firecat talks Rage into going through a magical gate, the animals go too. The gate changes the animals—they are now more bear, boy, warrior, and gentleman than dog or goat. Rage and her transformed friends find themselves stranded in Valley, a land of mythical beasts, fugitive witches and a dark city whose magic may be dying. They embark on a quest to save the world of Valley—a journey that Rage begins to believe will somehow save her mother.

For schoolteacher Thomas Abbey there was no writer to equal Marshall France, a legendary author of children's books who hid himself away in the small town of Galen and died of a heart attack at the age of forty-four. Tom and his girlfriend Saxony, wanting to write France's biography, arrive in Galen, where they discover the writer's fiercely protective daughter Anna is waiting for them. Before long, they realise that this idyllic little town and its inhabitants – both human and animal – are not quite what they seem: France's magic has spread beyond the printed page...

Harry Radcliffe is a brilliant prize-winning architect – a very witty and remarkable man. He is also a self-serving opportunist, ready to take advantage of whatever situations – and women – come his way. After all, "geniuses" are allowed to do anything.
But now Harry is being wooed and pursued by the extremely wealthy Sultan of Saru, who wants him to design a very special building. For the Sultan has one towering passion – dogs. And, fearing imminent assassination, he wants to build the ultimate reverential monument in the form of a billion-dollar Dog Museum.
Harry is profoundly uninterested in anything so bizarre...yet he has reached a strange point in his life, the aftermath of a recent divorce, an inexplicable nervous breakdown and the complexities of juggling with the affections of two strongminded women.
Then occurs a devastating earthquake, and suddenly the way seems clear. On his arrival in Saru he learns that the Sultan is no more, but his son wants the project to continue...not now in the Arabian desert, but in a remote corner of the Austrian Alps.
Once work begins, Harry's interest and then obsession grow, for this will be his ultimate triumph. But little does Radcliffe realise what he is now in the process of creating. As the powers of magic weave themselves around him, the implications of this strange undertaking grow ever more ominous and astounding...
From a world-renowned master of fantastical fiction and sheer inventiveness, a novel to provoke the mind and haunt the imagination.

This crazy world whirled about her, men and women dwarfed by toys and puppets, where even the birds were mechanical and the few human figures went masked . . . She was in the night again, and the doll was herself.
One night Melanie walks through the garden in her mother's wedding dress. The next morning her world is shattered. Forced to leave the rural home of her childhood, she is sent to London to live with relatives she has never met: gentle Aunt Margaret, mute since her wedding day; and her brothers, Francie, whose graceful music belies his clumsy nature, and the volatile Finn, who kisses Melanie in the pleasure garden. Brooding over all is Uncle Philip, who loves only the puppets he creates in his workshop, which are life-sized – and uncannily life-like.
The Magic Toyshop established Angela Carter as one of the most imaginative and original writers of the twentieth century.

For those "indelicate" readers who have not yet read "Chroniques d'un garde du corps et de son chat", or "L'odyssée limbique de Renatus Lourcin", I feel obliged to provide a brief introduction to the story that follows.
Steve Bartolonote is a private detective, bodyguard and owner of a Parisian agency as steampunk as its owner.
Working for and with him are Yelena, his ex but also, often, his constant companion, and mother of his son Arsene, Showy, a web prodigy lured by adventure and the ever-present mystery in Steve's life, and finally, in order of arrival in the novel, Elodie, steampunk Black Sabbath devil, communications specialist, poached from Mandarine and intermittent companion of the geek on duty.
Steve drives an Excalibur, among other things, worships Jules Verne, carries a Derringer in the pocket of his long embroidered coat, a coachman's hat tilted swaggeringly over his ear, very slim striped pants and ankle boots with buckles, gears and other copper decorations.
Steve is in eternal mourning for Jefferson, his white sphynx, who died in his arms after years of life and adventures (which I recommend, see above).
But has Jefferson really gone to the feline Eden?
It's worth asking (same advice as above).
But, I'll leave you to your choices and reflections, the steam locomotive whistle that serves as the agency's doorbell has just sounded its long, smoky call, Steve comes down to the office to welcome this new "client".

Dusty, sun-splattered lanes, a swimming hole, secret cigarettes, camping out with your dog as companion, carrying ten cents' worth of ice home on a string so that it swung deliciously against your knee – all these golden memories of a country childhood are here, as background to the laughter and tears of very real people.
The boy – who is the nameless hero of this book – knew King was his dog even before the bull-terrier puppy was born. And until, as a young man, the boy went off to war he and King were never far apart. Together they enjoyed the bitter-sweet life a small Georgia town before the Depression. Together they experienced a way of life that has almost vanished in today's frenzied tempo.
Together they witnessed the eccentric romancing of Miss Sallie Moultrie – who might be the prettiest, most charming teacher since Mary Poppins, but whose conduct would shock that lady. Together they saw how prejudice destroyed their Negro friend, Hubby. And they learned, and the boy grew up and grew away.
King is a wonderfully told story and a warm, colorful portrait of a disappearing America which will long be remembered through books like this.

At first Mary Ann's feelings towards this new addition to the household were of pure hatred. And who could blame her? To have your entire sitting room chewed up is hardly an endearing beginning. For Bill, due in court soon over an unfortunate 'misunderstanding' with the postman, is sure to cause them problems. And problems are the last thing any of the boys want from their holiday – especially Joe, who has been very upset since his mother left home.
But the boys are very glad to have Bill on board when they sail right into an adventure – one in which their very lives are to depend on the plucky dog's courage and spirit.
A dramatic and exciting tale, filled with memorable characters, in particular Bill, a loyal and indomitable bull terrier who is prepared to fight to his last breath to help his young masters.

When Fred Carpenter suggests to his wife, Sally, that they should take a boating holiday on the Norfolk Broads, she is filled with trepidation. Nevertheless she summons her courage and they and their bull terrier Bill set off with Fred at the helm of Dogfish Three.

Then everything changes as they make friends with the boating fraternity and encounter the remarkable fifteen-year-old Rosie, whose family history stirs their curiosity and sympathy. As a result, Fred and Sally decide to support Rosie's efforts to better herself – and are rewarded when she finds love and happiness.

Acclaimed artist Pamela Silin-Palmer and author Molly Coxe present the classic story of Beauty and her Beast afresh in Bunny and the Beast. Each page reveals animals in fantastic costumes who inhabit a lush landscape filled with magic, danger, and passion. Rabbit fairies and foggy troubadours, nose-twitching sisters and a  bewhiskered, well-meaning Papa, all accompany our heroine—the joyful, prancing Bunny—as she discovers the meaning of true love. And, of course, there is the Beast—a rugged bull terrier whose bark is much worse than his bite. Children will love following the amusing twists of this romantic tale of transformation, while savoring the witty and whimsical detail of the rich paintings. This beauty of a book proves that one is never too young (or too old!) to revel in the glories of a truly sumptuous picture book.

From the depths of his cell, he hopes... for a good master or rather a mistress, a little love, a few caresses... don't hesitate, he is waiting for you. Adopt him, he already loves you. But above all, above all, don't forget... Never tell him he's too fat.

Here is the return of Diégo the S.P.A. dog. He continues his adventures, always looking for masters who will want to adopt him. But it must be said that he is sometimes a little difficult, a bit touchy and a little cur, Diégo! Because, yes, it is he who chooses his masters rather than the other way around. A dog filled with humanity, he does not even lack speech even if he quickly learns to be silent. Diégo's lucidity makes him a character that is both funny and tender, insolent and endearing.

He comes back faster than a ball. Here is Diégo from the S.P.A. again, a crazy dog detached from everything, but endearing, with a ready tongue and an impeccable bandana. The smooth-talking canine always welcomes applicants to the Fleury-Méroupette S.P.A., each application being the opportunity for new adventures in which the hopelessly romantic pooch runs on his legs while maintaining a lofty view of human failings: he fondly remembers his ex-mistress who he hopes (in vain?) will return.

Description

The author describes the book as follows in the Introduction:

"I have always delighted in being with dogs, particularly terriers and especially bull terriers. Over the years I have kept a file about bull terriers and I decided I would mark the millennium by compiling a commonplace book about them from the contents of the file.

"I hope you will enjoy browsing through this little volume and that you will experience the company of the bull terrier's spirit if not the actual presence of the dog. As I write now, Jimmy is curled up in a leather armchair, breathing contentedly with one wary eye open to watch over me."

It is Spring, 1874, and twenty-year-old Sherlock Holmes is a lonely, mopey, friendless Oxford student. He attends classes and spends countless solitary hours conducting chemical experiments, reading, and playing his violin. Suddenly, his life changes because of a serendipitous moment on campus. While walking on the grounds of the university and practicing fencing moves with his foil, he encounters Victor Trevor and his sweetheart, Poppy Stamford, younger sister of the man who will one day introduce Sherlock to Dr. John Watson. Having just attended the final rowing contest of Eights Week, Victor and Poppy are also walking with her bull terrier. When the dog decides he doesn't like the looks of Sherlock, he sinks his teeth into Sherlock's ankle. This dog bite incident becomes a life-changing event for all of them. Through his new friendship with Victor Trevor and encouraged by Victor's father to use his genius for detective work, Sherlock discovers his uncanny abilities and a constellation of unfamiliar emotions as he and Poppy are thrust not only into a dangerous investigation into England's notorious baby-farming industry but into the perilous realm of young romance. Be an eyewitness to the emergence of how Sherlock became the man and the legend we know today.

Notes

This story is narrated by Poppy Stamford, owner of Little Elihu, the bull terrier who bites the ankle of a young Sherlock Holmes.
