“The places we are going to visit tonight are by far the most dangerous that this fair city has to offer. The streets and lanes are nasty places; a man might get lost in there and never reappear. The canals are full of bodies, and the rats grow fat on them.”
Christmas is coming to Victorian London’s most notorious slum, the Rookeries of St Giles. And as the snow falls, the bloody body count rises. A demonic serial killer stalks the streets, and nobody is safe.
Judas Iscariot, renowned thief-taker and scourge of London’s dark and dangerous underworld, has been engaged by a mysterious old businessman turned guardian angel, who wishes to keep a promising young writer called Charles Dickens safe, as he roams the streets looking for inspiration for his novels.
But Judas is not the only one watching Dickens closely. Murderers, ferocious beasts, and the rest of the worst that the underworld has to offer want his head, or his soul – depending on who gets there first.
A mouth-watering mashup of some of literature’s best-known characters, Oliver Twisted is a festive tale like no other, featuring the world’s most unusual investigator.
Notes
This is Book 3 of Martin Davey's series The Black Museum featuring DCI Judas Iscariot, an urban fantasy thriller series.
The story features Bill Sikes and his "only real friend" Bullseye prominently, but now Bullseye is "from another world, the enchanted world that occasionally overlapped with this one". "He was also the only talking dog in town."

There's something special about Darby.
He arrived by special-order delivery just as advertised, a "lively and affectionate" English bull terrier. But no mere words could possibly prepare the Bell family for the devoted—and devouring—Darby.
Bursting into their lives like a tail-wagging tornado, Darby seems determined to get to know his new home mouthful by mouthful. And though he takes a good chunk out of their table legs and sofa cushions, he soon steals the hearts of the often-befuddled Bells as well.
But only when calamity befalls the family do they discover that it's precisely that rambunctious stick-to-it-iveness that makes Darby a truly made-to-order dog!
Alexandra Day, creator of the beloved Carl books, teams up with co-author Cooper Edens to offer a fresh, funny tale for all those who love dogs, great stories, and the magical combination they create together.

Still from Oliver!
Summary
The story of Oliver Twist – orphaned, and set upon by evil and adversity from his first breath – shocked readers when it was first published. After running away from the workhouse and pompous beadle Mr Bumble, Oliver finds himself lured into a den of thieves peopled by vivid and memorable characters – the Artful Dodger, vicious burglar Bill Sikes, his dog Bull's-eye, and prostitute Nancy, all watched over by cunning masterthief Fagin. Combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama, Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society, and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery.
Notes
Oliver Twist is Charles Dickens' second novel. It was originally published as a serial from 1837 to 1839, and by Richard Bentley of London as a three-volume book in 1838. It has been republished many times since.
In the popular imagination, Bull's-eye, the dog belonging to Bill Sikes, is now assumed to be a bull terrier. In the Dickens novel, however, no breed is mentioned; Bull's-eye is described as "a white shaggy dog, with his face scratched and torn in twenty places".
The association between Bull's-eye and bull terriers can be traced to the hugely successful 1968 film (winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture) version of Oliver!, Lionel Bart's similarly successful stage musical adaptation of Dickens' novel, in which Bullseye (Bull's-eye) was played by a bull terrier called Butch.

Terry Doe has really had to suffer for his art. Having met Morris I can confirm it's all true. (We vividly recall Morris's only magazine photoshoot - despite extensive therapy.)
Terry's writing in Dogs Today has inspired a fanatical following. Terry's saint-like tolerance of Morris's disgraceful and incomprehensible behaviour has won him much respect. Many find comfort in the knowledge that no matter how badly their own dog behaves, Morris will have done worse.
Terry is quite simply the best storyteller I have ever encountered. I'll never forget reading my first ever Morris story. Many, many years later, his magazine column is always the first proof we all want to read. If you encounter Morris for the first time, make yourself comfortable - you'll not be putting this book down till you've finished it.

On the very day a handsome white bull terrier appeared on the Jansens' melon patch, a bandit with a black monster of a dog held up a store in nearby Springville. There seemed to be no connection whatever between the two events, although the well-trained white dog did have a small bullet wound in his leg, and that made Marty Jansen's father suspicious.
Where did the white dog come from? Who owned him? Marty couldn't answer these questions. but she did know she wanted him for herself and she knew his name had to be "the Major" — his manners were so entirely those of an officer and a gentleman. Also it was perfectly obvious that the Major had chosen a new owner — Marty.
The mystery of the Major's past was a real one and it badly needed solving. Marty enlisted the help of her friend Roger, on the next farm, who had a good imagination, to say the least. Things began to happen with a rush and before long everyone, including the reader, had the surprise of his life. Everyone, that is, except the Major, who knew all about it all the time.

From the author of The Bull Terrier Handbook, for Type, Conformation and Movement now comes a ground breaking history of the Bull Terrier.
The early history of the Bull Terrier is plagued with unanswered questions, dead ends and fables disguised as fact. The author sets out, digging deep into archive sources to unearth historic nuggets, providing breed enthusiasts with verifiable answers to some of those questions for the first time:
-
Was Old Madman really shown at Birmingham in December 1860?
-
Did the Puss fight take place at Tupper's well known rendezvous in Long Acre, or was Long Acre really too prestigious an area for such a venue?
-
What led to James Hinks withdrawing from the show scene in 1870?
-
What brought him back to shows again?
Verifiable answers to these age old questions are revealed, together with many more.

In 1907, the stories of the pioneering treks and various ways of a man and his dog were put into a book. A South African classic was born — and reprinted four times in its first year. Over generations, this adventure in hailstorms and drought, through the Berg with the people of the bushveld, has been published in several forms and has been translated into Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Dutch, French, and other languages.
Editor's Note
This South African classic among animal stories is published here in an edited version. For better understanding, the language has been modernised, the measurements have been metriculated, and the Glossary has been expanded. While the prejudicial racial references have been eliminated, the esoteric charm and innocent philosophical tone have been lefty scrupulously intact.
Many of the original illustrations from 1907 by Edmund Caldwell (1851—1930) appear in this edition.

Anyone who has ever loved a dog will treasure this superb collection of all the fine dog stories ever written by that unsurpassed teller of tales, John Taintor Foote. Thousands of readers have discovered and loved Mr. Foote's realistic, understanding portrayals of some of the greatest dogs in fiction when they appeared in various national magazines. Here, for the first time, those admirers will find Mr. Foote's complete works in a single, low-priced edition. Here, too, new readers will find a half-dozen vivid accounts of both real and fictional dogs.
The famous Dumb-Bell of Brookfield is perhaps the best-known of all Mr. Foote's stories. Often called "the greatest dog story," this is the saga of a truly great dog, his triumphs in the field and in the kennel, his human and canine friends of the Brookfield estate, his heroic fate among the frozen pines of the north woods.
Pocono Shot is another dog not soon to be forgotten, and his story is as fine and moving a story of a man and his dog as has ever been written. There is the sly, happy-hearted and thoroughly appealing tale of Trub, the bull terrier, likewise the Molecule, a Yale man who sort of owned him, as told in Trub's Diary. And one of the best of the collection is the true account of Myrtle, one of Mr. Foote's own setters, whose story is told in Dog Upon the Waters. Jing, a great fictional field-trial dog, and Allegheny, a pit bull and a fighter, both have the swift-paced, tensely active lives one would expect.
Some of the excellent stories have never been produced in book form, and none of them has been generally available in recent seasons prior to the publication of this book, formerly titled Dumb-Bell and Others.
Notes
The dusk jacket illustrations are credited to Milton Weiler.
Trub's Diary occupies pages 165 to 283 in this edition.
Trub's Diary was published stand-alone in 1929 by D. Appleton & Co. (New York).

Whether you're horrified or edified by dogfighting, you'll enjoy this suspenseful tale about Blazer the pit bull terrier, a dog who fights other dogs. It's a story of greed and betrayal, animal courage and animal ferocity. It's a story about the men who live off dogs condemned to the life and death struggles of the dog pits—and of the occasional dogfighting man redeemed through the love of a good dog. It's a story of loyalty and devotion—sometimes returned in kind, but often exchanged for large doses of brutality. It's a story of fear and excitement, satisfaction and reward. It's a story of the love of a man for a dog and the love of a dog for a child. It's a good story, well told.

In this work Mr. Gordon has given a wealth of information not only on the present-day Bull Terrier but on the early pillars of the breed, the Gladiators of the old fighting pits and the heroes of the rat-killing contest.
The chapters dealing with the show history of the Bull Terrier are of immense value to the student of pedigrees, while the numerous diagrams in the text serve as excellent blueprints for the serious breeder.
As usual Mr. Gordon's photographic illustrations reveal his studied selection of the best dogs in the breed covering a lifetime in the Bull Breeds.

There is never laughter in this house; only the dull sounds of age and weakness. But I am not weak. I have strength and resourcefulness that the old woman probably never had.
What are the possibilities of my strength? That is a thought I have never had before. What if some morning as the old woman stood at the head of the staircase she were suddenly to feel a weight thrusting against the back of her legs? What if she were to lunge forward, grasping at the air, striking her thin skull against the edge of a stair? What would become of me if she were found unmoving at the bottom of the stairway?
Someone else would love me, as she loved me. I'm certain of that. People have a great interest in love. They see it everywhere; probably even in me.

Jack and Larry is the heartwarming story of a man, a dog, and a baseball team. Leadoff batter for the Cleveland American League team from 1912-22, Jack Graney was loved for many reasons, not least among them the fact that he owned Larry, bull terrier mascot of the woebegone, 102-losses, 48-games-out team that struggled to prove itself worthy. Larry, too, was loved, not only by the Cleveland fans, but by porters, bellhops, ship captains and trolly car conductors in all American League cities and in Canada. Loyal, sensitive, intelligent, Larry was more than a mascot — he was part of the team.
Jack and Larry is a story about the eventual triumph of the underdog ... about sports mascots ... 1910’s baseball ... bull terriers ... and overcoming hardships. This gripping tale of the pursuit of the pennant is a story of devotion, commitment, and persistence, illustrating what it means to be major league. You will laugh, you will cry. You will wish you had been there to see it.

At eleven years old Dudley had a reputation as a bad lot, for he was silent, unfriendly and constantly in fights. His father, Bill Kershaw, had brought him up to be hard, to admit no fear or, indeed, any other feeling, almost as though he were a fighting dog like Madman.
Dog fighting in the 1930s was against the law, but in this wild corner of the Yorkshire moors it was dying out slowly. The Kershaws had always kept fighting dogs, and now it was time for Dudley to choose a puppy to train, one of Madman's own sons.
But the puppy, Grip, turned everything upside down. He was warm and funny with his chunky body and bright black eyes. He loved life and he adored Dudley, arousing in him feelings he had never known. He became the centre of Dudley's life, but – he would not fight.
This is an exciting story, and often a moving one, and for Dudley it involved some hard lessons about love and about courage. Torn between his father's harsh, familiar world, and the new, surprising ideas of David and May, Grip's passionate champion, Dudley searched for a solution, and the dramatic events which finally provided one make compelling reading.

'The child was even weaker than I thought, and I acted quickly. I was careful not to touch its delicate skin with my teeth. It was a simple matter to grasp its clothing and drag it to the water. It cried out briefly before I forced it under. It quickly went limp, and I stood back and watched until I knew its feeble hold on life was broken.
'I knew that the man and woman would be distressed for a time, but I expected that after a few days they would begin to stroke me and would look at me with a new interest and respect. But I know now that that will never happen.
'They are like the old woman. They no longer live in the present. They are obsessed with the past; not with past pleasures, but with past unpleasantness. Their love has been replaced by fear. It is possible that all humans are that way, but I cannot believe it. There must be some who see the world as I do; who know neither love nor fear. I think I can find such a person.'
Thus run the thoughts in Baxter's massive bull-terrier skull. A skull whose freak blue eyes disqualify the dog for pedigree showing, and condemn him to 'pethood'. This is the story of Baxter's reign of terror as he tests the possibilities of his strength in a territory he marks out as his own with his scent of death and destruction.

The distinctive-looking Bull Terrier has a charm all of its own. Strong and powerful, almost bull-like in its conformation, this is the true gladiator of the canine race. The breed was created in England in the first half of the 19th Century from the Bulldog-terrier crosses specially developed for the fighting pits. The Bull Terrier emerged as a tough and courageous competitor, as well as being a natural comedian and a devoted companion.
In this highly comprehensive book of the breed, the author traces the history of the Bull Terrier from its origins to its present status as a much-loved companion dog and impressive show dog. Advice is given on choosing a puppy, feeding and exercise routines, and general health care. The Breed Standard is analysed in detail, and there is comprehensive coverage of the training of the family dog and preparing the Bull Terrier for the show ring. Bull Terriers Today is illustrated with more than 150 top-quality colour and black-and-white photographs.

Discover the real bully dogs and the truth about these often-misunderstood yet ever-popular canines. The whole fraternity of bully breed owners and devotees will revel in this long-overdue celebration of the six bull-and-terrier dogs that are the focus of this Kennel Club Classic edition. With eye-popping photographs and the spot-on narrative provided by world-renowned author, judge and bully breed historian Dr. David Harris. The Bully Breeds tells the true story of these controversial dogs, from rats to riches. Trace the bullies from their beginnings as illegitimate participants in bull-baiting rings, ratting matches and dog-fighting pits to their rise to respectable employment as companions, athletes, show dogs and service dogs.
Meet the descendants of the original bull-and-terrier dogs—gladiators that combined the strength and power of the Bulldog with the agility, speed and intelligence of the terrier—who today are among the world's most devoted purebred dogs: the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Boston Terrier, Bull Terrier, Miniature Bull Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. In this tenacious and somewhat stubborn sextet, we befriend the truest of canine comrades, whose loyalty, affection and sense of humor make them endure as great champions. Additionally, Dr. Harris introduces us to about a dozen "new" bully breeds that are developing today as breeders aim to recreate the Bulldogge of old.
The Bully Breeds is an insider's account of life with a bully, highlighting the characteristics, abilities and accomplishments of these breeds. The author also examines the concerns of modern-day bully owners, including breed-specific legislation and the responsibility to own dogs that are good ambassadors for their breeds. As the subject of celebrated paintings and sculptures, the bully breeds have enjoyed prominence in artwork through the centuries. This valid aspect of the breeds' history is discussed here in an elaborately illustrated chapter contributed by the world's top expert in canine art, William Secord.

Small boys who have dogs or neighbors or troubles will take to this story instantly—for those three things are just what it's about. Hank had plenty of cronies, but wanted a dog. One dog led to too many dogs, and too many dogs led to trouble—neighborhood trouble. But with a little parental help, things were straightened out to everyone's satisfaction.
This is a book for a boy who is just beginning to read "real" books of his own. Language, illustrations, and type all contribute to ease of reading, and yet style is not sacrificed to over-simplification. Although many good books have been written about the dog, said by some to be the best friend of man, few such volumes may be said to possess so engaging a simplicity and directness of style, as much homely wisdom, or such a shrewd and entertaining blend of understanding and whimsy. This is the story of a personality which happened to belong to a dog. Those who know bull terriers are aware that this breed is especially gifted with humour, downright common sense, good manners and a lack of sloppy thinking. It is disastrous to hope to persuade one to give a paw or to sit up and beg: they will merely look you in the eye. Otherwise, if treated with respect, they are charming, witty and good-natured companions. The media have recently given a bad press to pit bulls; these are a tragic and distinct colony of the breed deliberately manufactured to fight.
Alice never fought in her life. Her story, in course of which almost everything else happened that could, is inextricably woven with that of her owner, the author, whose own life for twelve years was illumined by Alice's company, first in Galloway in south-west Scotland, and later on in London. The way to find out what happened in both places is to buy the book!
Photographic illustrations include one of a unique hurdle taken by a bull terrier competing against Alsatians in police training trials; an early engraving from 1804 when the breed was put together; a subtly amusing Victorian print made at the time of the introduction of brindles, then thought slightly improper; and a picture of Toughy, Alice's sweetheart, showing his Roman nose. The line drawings by Val Oxberry speak for themselves. This book is a must, both for those who know these special dogs and those who want to improve their education. It can be read by, or to, all ages.

Kid in a Dog Suit is a collection of personal stories regarding the special relationships of that remarkable creature, the Bull Terrier. Bull Terriers are into peer relationships, which makes them difficult to understand for the ordinary person with ordinary expectations of what a dog should be and do. They are an essence captured in a dog's body, possessed of a sense of humor (an imagination, if you will) that renders them "creative" which is both good and bad news for the unwary person who shares their domicile.
When interviewed in 1985 for an upcoming article in Gentlemen's Quarterly, I was asked how I would describe a Bull Terrier to the unfamiliar. My reply: "A two-year old kid in a dog suit" summed up their activity level (high), their stubbornness (legendary), their imagination (surprising), their need for discipline (crucial), their vulnerability (tender) and their need for, and response to love and attention (key).
This book is about the very special relationships that Bull Terriers have with their friends and the world around them. It is about their creativity, their devotion and their unique outlook. They are truly kids in dog suits.

All about the Bull Terrier is about the nuts and bolts of owning, understanding, breeding, showing and judging Bull Terriers.
Tom Horner is a Championship and International judge, and breeder of the Tartary Bull Terriers, who won the author the coveted Regent Trophy.
His book does not set out to be a history, but a practical book for both the first-time owner and the more expert. He gives advice on buying a puppy, the routine of keeping and caring for a Terrier, showing, breeding and judging. He discusses the Kennel Club Standard of the Breed, and devotes special chapters to 'Conformation and Character', 'Movement', 'Type', and 'Mouths'.
The book is extensively illustrated with Bull Terriers good and not so good, to illustrate points in the text. Already well-established in the 'All about' series, it has been revised, re-illustrated, and entirely reset for this second edition.
